Dear Friends,

The Friends have enjoyed 2011. It feels good to volunteer for an organization where you can see your efforts have a direct impact on the community. We are still charging the same prices that we did in 1980 because we can afford to do it. We have expanded our revenues by selling rare books online, offering daily bargains in the Main Library Atrium and adding special Front Porch sales to coincide with community events.

Of course, none of this would be possible without the high quality materials supplied by our donors. We appreciate your generosity. We also appreciate the patronage of those who make purchases. All proceeds go to support the Library with materials and programming—everything from the movies and concerts in this Program Guide to the Summer Reading Program.

Getting the materials ready for each sale is physically demanding work. It takes sharp minds, too. We depend on a core group of dedicated volunteers to get the job done, but many of us are now in our 80s. We need new Friends with strong bodies and a desire to contribute to Lakewood’s book-loving community. Can you spare a few hours? Signing up to volunteer is now as easy as clicking the button below. We hope to hear from you soon.

Thank you for your continued support!

Paul Dimmick
President

Sunday with the Friends

Nearly every Sunday at 2:00 pm, the Friends of Lakewood Public Library are proud to present free concerts, lectures and more. Join us in the Main Library Auditorium. These programs are open to one and all.

DECEMBER 4           The Happy Holiday Bob Ford
Funloving Bob Ford is known for combining Celtic folk music with tall tales of the American frontier. On this jolly Sunday, he’ll be adding holiday favorites to the mix for a lighthearted afternoon of gingerbread goodness.

DECEMBER 11         The Flip Side
You’ve seen them around town, playing solo, in duos and all together. The Flipside is like five bands in one! Their gentle harmonies and earnest dedication to music and community allow them to put a personal stamp on their repertoire of original songs, folk standards and classic rock.

JANUARY 8              Jim Volk Guitar
His masterful yet whimsical performances have spellbound audiences for decades. With a fiery hybrid style of guitar picking that has drawn comparisons to Kottke, Keagy and Hedges, Jim Volk romps through the history of music, from 16th century classical to ‘70s metal with a few deft flicks of the wrist.

JANUARY 15             Neil Jacobs: American Gypsy
Drawing inspiration from far-flung travels and his own improbable life, Neil Jacobs writes music for the 12-string guitar that lets you know what it feels like to caravan with modern-day Gypsies in Spain, break bread in a Balkan refugee camp and saddle up with surreal cowboy dreamers.

JANUARY 22              Millionaire’s Mile: The Great Estates of Wickliffe
What does The King’s Speech have to do with Cleveland? We could tell you, but trust us—you’d rather hear it from the master, Dan Ruminski. He’s got a story filled with Rockefellers, Corrigans, McKinneys and Coulbys that that would rival any Greek tragedy. You’ll never look at Wickliffe the same again! This special event will take place in the First Floor Multipurpose Room.

JANUARY 29            Sunday Afternoon Cinema:
Stormy Weather (1943)                      Directed By Andrew Stone                Not Rated
Lena Horne sings her signature tune in this musical biography of Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, featuring Cab Calloway, Fats Waller, and the Nicholas Brothers. Filmed in breathtaking black-and-white. Recorded in heartbroken surround sound.

FEBRUARY 5           The Hollywood Slim Trio
Hollywood Slim and his brother John have been harmonizing on swing, jazz and blues standards for over thirty-five years and they’re still having a ball, learning new tricks and playing old favorites. You can’t go see Ray Charles, Little Walter or Nat “King” Cole anymore, so come to the Library and catch a glimpse of one of Cleveland’s best kept secrets.

FEBRUARY 19         Northcoast Jazz Collective
What can we say? According to Scene Magazine, these guys are the Best Jazz Group around. Playing straight up modern jazz that’s creative, emotional and accessible, this quartet braves the post-bop world with a hard-working trademark sound that says Cleveland all the way. We can’t think of a better way to say goodbye to another great season of Sundays…
