A farmers market is a delightful counterpoint to modern life, a little patch of green in an asphalt city, an oasis of sight and touch and smell in a climate-controlled, vacuum-sealed world.

A NOTE FROM THE MARKET

It's strange but true -- and completely uplifting! In this sluggish economy with ever-rising fuel costs, many of our artisan small businesses are doing extremely well. And while large farms are losing market share, the small and medium size farms that sell direct to you are actually growing their small businesses.

So, what does this mean for our local economy? Dollars stay right here in Northeast Ohio -- and rotate throughout our region. What does it mean for you? High quality, healthy food at your table...direct from the farm. Not food shipped from some unseen producer over 1,500 miles away -- or even as far as China. And it's not food that's changed hands over six times while using up more natural resources than it was ever worth.

Our locally grown foods consume remarkable little fuel to produce -- and you get it fresh and full of nutrients when you "Buy Local."

We deeply appreciate all your support for North Union Farmers Market. Remember -- the markets not only support local farms, but artists, chefs and bakers right here in Northeast Ohio.

"Like a small seed, its impact will strengthen small farms in northeast Ohio"

Dear Friend of the Market,

You come to North Union Farmers Market for fresh, locally grown food. At every stand, at every location, our farmers bring their very best, so you can have healthy, nutrient-dense foods … an experience you won’t find anywhere else. The sights, sounds, tastes, and smells -- these are the simple and sublime delights of a North Union Farmers Market. North Union Farmers Market bridges the urban and the rural – in a dynamic place where neighbors meet each other and farmers greet you eye to eye. Our markets support and promote healthy living for the people in our region. This is our passion – and our mission.

Now we need your help. We make a difference in our communities. We come to the people we trust to help us meet our goal of raising $50,000. This will enable North Union Farmers Market to support local farms -- through marketing, creating lively marketplaces and maintaining strong viable farmer’s markets.

Your donations are critical in our efforts to:

  • educate consumers on the benefits of eating locally grown food.
  • serve as consultants to local farmers – with education programs, new ideas and a place to sell their goods.

Over the last few years we’ve supported over 300 new businesses as an incubator for local farmers and artisans.  And our markets promote economic development: for every dollar spent at farmers' markets, consumers spend $3 at nearby retailers.  Our original Shaker Square market has more than proven its value – since its creation, it has been a major attraction that supports the Square’s redevelopment plan.

If we are to live out the mission of North Union Farmers Market -- providing you with access to the very best in fresh, locally grown food -- we need your help.

Please donate today.

Mission

The North Union Farmers Market operates authentic producers-only farmers markets in Northeast Ohio in order to educate the public about the benefits of eating locally grown food.

Why We Do This

  • To teach consumers about the taste and health benefits of eating fresh, locally grown produce.
  • To improve the local and regional economy by creating vibrant community spaces.
  • To enhance our environment through sustainable food systems and by enabling sustainable farms to sell directly to consumers and supporting sustainable food systems.

Background and History

Customer and vendor shake handsThe North Union Farmers Market is a not-for-profit organization co-founded in 1995 by Market Manager Donita Anderson with the opening of the Shaker Square market in Cleveland, Ohio. On the first day there were six farmers who sold out in half an hour.

North Union Farmers Market has grown to include five more markets in Lakewood, Parma, Bath, Woodmere and Westlake. The Market now has over 87 regional farmers and many local artisans that join us throughout the season, and boasts foot traffic of 2,000 plus at the Saturday market.

NUFM is a certified producers-only market. What does that mean?
Each producer undergoes an onsite farm inspection. Each farm submits a crop list and site plan in the application process after their farm certification. Certification requires lease or ownership records, seed receipts, number of acres under production, site location, and approximate harvest. Everything is confirmed by our trained Field Worker.
